2023-11-08block: Protect bs->file with graph_lockKevin Wolf
Almost all functions that access bs->file already take the graph lock now. Add locking to the remaining users and finally annotate the struct field itself as protected by the graph lock. 2023-11-08block: Take graph lock for most of .bdrv_openKevin Wolf
Most implementations of .bdrv_open first open their file child (which is an operation that internally takes the write lock and therefore we shouldn't hold the graph lock while calling it), and afterwards many operations that require holding the graph lock, e.g. for accessing bs->file. This changes block drivers that follow this pattern to take the graph lock after opening the child node. 2023-10-12block: Mark bdrv_apply_auto_read_only() and callers GRAPH_RDLOCKKevin Wolf
This adds GRAPH_RDLOCK annotations to declare that callers of bdrv_apply_auto_read_only() need to hold a reader lock for the graph because it calls bdrv_can_set_read_only(), which indirectly accesses the parents list of a node. 2022-11-06module: add Error arguments to module_load and module_load_qomClaudio Fontana
improve error handling during module load, by changing: bool module_load(const char *prefix, const char *lib_name); void module_load_qom(const char *type); to: int module_load(const char *prefix, const char *name, Error **errp); int module_load_qom(const char *type, Error **errp); where the return value is: -1 on module load error, and errp is set with the error 0 on module or one of its dependencies are not installed 1 on module load success 2 on module load success (module already loaded or built-in) module_load_qom_one has been introduced in: commit 28457744c345 ("module: qom module support"), which built on top of module_load_one, but discarded the bool return value. Restore it. Adapt all callers to emit errors, or ignore them, or fail hard, as appropriate in each context. Replace the previous emission of errors via fprintf in _some_ error conditions with Error and error_report, so as to emit to the appropriate target. A memory leak is also fixed as part of the module_load changes. audio: when attempting to load an audio module, report module load errors. Note that still for some callers, a single issue may generate multiple error reports, and this could be improved further. Regarding the audio code itself, audio_add() seems to ignore errors, and this should probably be improved. block: when attempting to load a block module, report module load errors. For the code paths that already use the Error API, take advantage of those to report module load errors into the Error parameter. For the other code paths, we currently emit the error, but this could be improved further by adding Error parameters to all possible code paths. console: when attempting to load a display module, report module load errors. qdev: when creating a new qdev Device object (DeviceState), report load errors. If a module cannot be loaded to create that device, now abort execution (if no CONFIG_MODULE) or exit (if CONFIG_MODULE). qom/object.c: when initializing a QOM object, or looking up class_by_name, report module load errors. qtest: when processing the "module_load" qtest command, report errors in the load of the module. 2022-10-27block: introduce bdrv_open_file_child() helperVladimir Sementsov-Ogievskiy
Almost all drivers call bdrv_open_child() similarly. Let's create a helper for this. The only not updated drivers that call bdrv_open_child() to set bs->file are raw-format and snapshot-access: raw-format sometimes want to have filtered child but don't set drv->is_filter to true. snapshot-access wants only DATA | PRIMARY Possibly we should implement drv->is_filter_func() handler, to consider raw-format as filter when it works as filter.. But it's another story. Note also, that we decrease assignments to bs->file in code: it helps us restrict modifying this field in further commit. 2021-09-29block: use int64_t instead of uint64_t in driver read handlersVladimir Sementsov-Ogievskiy
We are generally moving to int64_t for both offset and bytes parameters on all io paths. Main motivation is realization of 64-bit write_zeroes operation for fast zeroing large disk chunks, up to the whole disk. We chose signed type, to be consistent with off_t (which is signed) and with possibility for signed return type (where negative value means error). So, convert driver read handlers parameters which are already 64bit to signed type. While being here, convert also flags parameter to be BdrvRequestFlags. Now let's consider all callers. Simple git grep '\->bdrv_\(aio\|co\)_preadv\(_part\)\?' shows that's there three callers of driver function: bdrv_driver_preadv() in block/io.c, passes int64_t, checked by bdrv_check_qiov_request() to be non-negative. qcow2_load_vmstate() does bdrv_check_qiov_request(). do_perform_cow_read() has uint64_t argument. And a lot of things in qcow2 driver are uint64_t, so converting it is big job. But we must not work with requests that don't satisfy bdrv_check_qiov_request(), so let's just assert it here. Still, the functions may be called directly, not only by drv->... Let's check: git grep '\.bdrv_\(aio\|co\)_preadv\(_part\)\?\s*=' | \ awk '{print $4}' | sed 's/,//' | sed 's/&//' | sort | uniq | \ while read func; do git grep "$func(" | \ grep -v "$func(BlockDriverState"; done The only one such caller: QEMUIOVector qiov = QEMU_IOVEC_INIT_BUF(qiov, &data, 1); ... ret = bdrv_replace_test_co_preadv(bs, 0, 1, &qiov, 0); in tests/unit/test-bdrv-drain.c, and it's OK obviously. 2020-05-18block: Use bdrv_default_perms()Max Reitz
bdrv_default_perms() can decide which permission profile to use based on the BdrvChildRole, so block drivers do not need to select it explicitly. The blkverify driver now no longer shares the WRITE permission for the image to verify. We thus have to adjust two places in test-block-iothread not to take it. (Note that in theory, blkverify should behave like quorum in this regard and share neither WRITE nor RESIZE for both of its children. In practice, it does not really matter, because blkverify is used only for debugging, so we might as well keep its permissions rather liberal.) We want to unify child_format and child_file at some point. 2019-01-04dmg: don't skip zero chunkyuchenlin
The dmg file has many tables which describe: "start from sector XXX to sector XXX, the compression method is XXX and where the compressed data resides on". Each sector in the expanded file should be covered by a table. The table will describe the offset of compressed data (or raw depends on the type) in the dmg. For example: [-----------The expanded file------------] [---bzip table ---]/* zeros */[---zlib---] ^ | if we want to read this sector. we will find bzip table which contains this sector, and get the compressed data offset, read it from dmg, uncompress it, finally write to expanded file. If we skip zero chunk (table), some sector cannot find the table which will cause search_chunk() return s->n_chunks, dmg_read_chunk() return -1 and finally causing dmg_co_preadv() return EIO. See: [-----------The expanded file------------] [---bzip table ---]/* zeros */[---zlib---] ^ | if we want to read this sector. Oops, we cannot find the table contains it... In the original implementation, we don't have zero table. When we try to read sector inside the zero chunk. We will get EIO, and skip reading. After this patch, we treat zero chunk the same as ignore chunk, it will directly write zero and avoid some sector may not find the table. Some block drivers have traditionally changed their node to read-only mode without asking the user. This behaviour has been marked deprecated since 2.11, expecting users to provide an explicit read-only=on option. Now that we have auto-read-only=on, enable these drivers to make use of the option. This is the only use of bdrv_set_read_only(), so we can make it a bit more specific and turn it into a bdrv_apply_auto_read_only() that is more convenient for drivers to use. 2017-04-24block: do not set BDS read_only if copy_on_read enabledJeff Cody
A few block drivers will set the BDS read_only flag from their .bdrv_open() function. This means the bs->read_only flag could be set after we enable copy_on_read, as the BDRV_O_COPY_ON_READ flag check occurs prior to the call to bdrv->bdrv_open(). This adds an error return to bdrv_set_read_only(), and an error will be return if we try to set the BDS to read_only while copy_on_read is enabled. This patch also changes the behavior of vvfat. Before, vvfat could override the drive 'readonly' flag with its own, internal 'rw' flag. For instance, this -drive parameter would result in a writable image: "-drive format=vvfat,dir=/tmp/vvfat,rw,if=virtio,readonly=on" This is not correct. Now, attempting to use the above -drive parameter will result in an error (i.e., 'rw' is incompatible with 'readonly=on'). The way that attaching bs->file worked was a bit unusual in that it was the only child that would be attached to a node which is not opened yet. Because of this, the block layer couldn't know yet which permissions the driver would eventually need. This patch moves the point where bs->file is attached to the beginning of the individual .bdrv_open() implementations, so drivers already know what they are going to do with the child. This is also more consistent with how driver-specific children work. For a moment, bdrv_open() gets its own BdrvChild to perform image probing, but instead of directly assigning this BdrvChild to the BDS, it becomes a temporary one and the node name is passed as an option to the drivers, so that they can simply use bdrv_open_child() to create another reference for their own use. This duplicated child for (the not opened yet) bs is not the final state, a follow-up patch will change the image probing code to use a BlockBackend, which is completely independent of bs. dmg.o was moved to block-obj-m in 5505e8b76 to become a separate module, so that its reference to libbz2, since 6b383c08c, doesn't add an extra library to the main executable. Until recently, commit 06e60f70a (blockdev: Add dynamic module loading for block drivers) moved it back to block-obj-y to simplify the design of dynamic loading of block modules. But we don't want to lose the feature of less library dependency on the main executable. The solution here is to move only the bz2 related code to a separate DSO file, and load it when dmg_open is called. dmg_probe doesn't depend on bz2 support to work, and is the only code in this file which can run before dmg_open. While we are at it, fix the unhelpful cast of last argument passed to dmg_uncompress_bz2. 2016-07-05block: Set request_alignment during .bdrv_refresh_limits()Eric Blake
We want to eventually stick request_alignment alongside other BlockLimits, but first, we must ensure it is populated at the same time as all other limits, rather than being a special case that is set only when a block is first opened. Add a .bdrv_refresh_limits() to all four of our legacy devices that will always be sector-only (bochs, cloop, dmg, vvfat), in spite of their recent conversion to expose a byte interface. 2016-03-22include/qemu/osdep.h: Don't include qapi/error.hMarkus Armbruster
Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h, compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a similar job to this file and are under similar constraints." qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of 100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need. Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List. Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h, sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h comment quoted above similarly. This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one. Signed-off-by: Markus Armbruster <armbru@redhat.com> [Fix compilation without the spice devel packages. - Paolo] Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>

2015-02-06block/dmg: improve zeroes handlingPeter Wu
Disk images may contain large all-zeroes gaps (1.66k sectors or 812 MiB is seen in the real world). These blocks (type 2) do not need to be extracted into a temporary buffer, there is no need to allocate memory for these blocks nor to check its length. (For the test image, the maximum uncompressed size is 1054371 bytes, probably for a bzip2-compressed block.) 2015-02-06block/dmg: support bzip2 block entry typesPeter Wu
This patch adds support for bzip2-compressed block entries as introduced with OS X 10.4 (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Disk_Image). It was tested against a 5.2G "OS X Yosemite" installation image which stores the BLXX block in the XML property list (instead of resource forks) and has over 5k chunks. New configure entries are added (--enable-bzip2 / --disable-bzip2) to control inclusion of bzip2 functionality (which requires linking against libbz2). The help message suggests that this option is needed for DMG files, but the tests are generic enough that other parts of QEMU can use bzip2 if needed. The identifiers are based on http://newosxbook.com/DMG.html. The decompression routines are based on the zlib case, but as there is no way to reset the decompression state (unlike zlib), memory is allocated and deallocated for every decompression. This should not be problematic as the decompression takes most of the time and as blocks are typically about/over 1 MiB in size, only one allocation is done every 2000 sectors. 2015-02-06block/dmg: use SectorNumber from BLKX headerPeter Wu
Previously the sector table parsing relied on the previous offset of the DMG file. Now it uses the sector number from the BLKX header (see http://newosxbook.com/DMG.html). The implementation of dmg2img (from vu1tur) does not base the output sector on the location of the terminator (0xffffffff) either so it should be safe to drop this dependency on the previous state. (It makes somehow makes sense, a terminator should halt further processing of a block and is perhaps used to preallocate some space.)
