2019-08-27trace: Clarify DTrace/SystemTap help messagePhilippe Mathieu-Daudé
Most tracing backends are implemented within QEMU, except the DTrace/SystemTap backends. One side effect is when running 'qemu -trace help', an incomplete list of trace events is displayed when using the DTrace/SystemTap backends. This is partly due to trace events registered as modules with trace_init(), and since the events are not used within QEMU, the linker optimize and remove the unused modules (which is OK in this particular case). Currently only the events compiled in trace-root.o and in the last trace.o member of libqemuutil.a are linked, resulting in an incomplete list of events. To avoid confusion, improve the help message, recommending to use the proper systemtap script to display the events list. 2019-08-16trace: Do not include qom/cpu.h into generated trace.hMarkus Armbruster
docs/devel/tracing.txt explains "since many source files include trace.h, [the generated trace.h use] a minimum of types and other header files included to keep the namespace clean and compile times and dependencies down." Commit 4815185902 "trace: Add per-vCPU tracing states for events with the 'vcpu' property" made them all include qom/cpu.h via control-internal.h. qom/cpu.h in turn includes about thirty headers. Ouch. Per-vCPU tracing is currently not supported in sub-directories' trace-events. In other words, qom/cpu.h can only be used in trace-root.h, not in any trace.h. Split trace/control-vcpu.h off trace/control.h and trace/control-internal.h. Have the generated trace.h include trace/control.h (which no longer includes qom/cpu.h), and trace-root.h include trace/control-vcpu.h (which includes it). The resulting improvement is a bit disappointing: in my "build everything" tree, some 1100 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h) depend on a trace.h, and about 600 of them no longer depend on qom/cpu.h. But more than 1300 others depend on trace-root.h. More work is clearly needed. Left for another day. Its only caller hmp_trace_file() passes monitor_fprintf() and the current monitor cast to FILE *. monitor_fprintf() casts it right back, and is otherwise identical to monitor_printf(). The type-punning is ugly. Drop the callback, and call qemu_printf() instead. If the tracefs mountpoint has a very long path we may exceed PATH_MAX. This is a system misconfiguration and the user must resolve it so that applications can perform path-based system calls successfully. This issue does not occur on real-world systems since tracefs is mounted on /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/, but the compiler is smart enough to foresee the possibility and warn about the unchecked snprintf(3) return value. This patch fixes the compiler warning. The GLibC compile farm, however, uses Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty) which only has glib 2.40.0, and this is needed for testing during merge. Thus an exception is made to the documented platform support policy to allow for all three current LTS releases to be supported. Docker jobs that not longer satisfy this new min version are removed. In my "build everything" tree, a change to the types in qapi-schema.json triggers a recompile of about 4800 out of 5100 objects. The previous commit split up qmp-commands.h, qmp-event.h, qmp-visit.h, qapi-types.h. Each of these headers still includes all its shards. Reduce compile time by including just the shards we actually need. To illustrate the benefits: adding a type to qapi/migration.json now recompiles some 2300 instead of 4800 objects. The next commit will improve it further. Convert all the single line uses of fprintf(stderr, "warning:"..."\n"... to use warn_report() instead. This helps standardise on a single method of printing warnings to the user. All of the warnings were changed using this command: find ./* -type f -exec sed -i \ 's|fprintf(.*".*warning[,:] \(.*\)\\n"\(.*\));|warn_report("\1"\2);|Ig' \ {} + Some of the lines were manually edited to reduce the line length to below 80 charecters. The #include lines were manually updated to allow the code to compile. This was to help standardise on a single method of printing warnings to the user. There appears to have been some cases that slipped through in patch sets applied around the same time, this patch catches the few remaining cases. All of the warnings were changed using this command: find ./* -type f -exec sed -i \ 's|error_report(".*warning[,:] |warn_report("|Ig' {} + Indentation fixed up manually afterwards. 2017-07-17exec: [tcg] Use different TBs according to the vCPU's dynamic tracing stateLluís Vilanova
Every vCPU now uses a separate set of TBs for each set of dynamic tracing event state values. Each set of TBs can be used by any number of vCPUs to maximize TB reuse when vCPUs have the same tracing state. This feature is later used by tracetool to optimize tracing of guest code events. The maximum number of TB sets is defined as 2^E, where E is the number of events that have the 'vcpu' property (their state is stored in CPUState->trace_dstate). For this to work, a change on the dynamic tracing state of a vCPU will force it to flush its virtual TB cache (which is only indexed by address), and fall back to the physical TB cache (which now contains the vCPU's dynamic tracing state as part of the hashing function). 2017-07-17trace: Allocate cpu->trace_dstate in placeLluís Vilanova
There's little point in dynamically allocating the bitmap if we know at compile-time the max number of events we want to support. Thus, make room in the struct for the bitmap, which will make things easier later: this paves the way for upcoming changes, in which we'll use a u32 to fully capture cpu->trace_dstate. This change also increases performance by saving a dereference and improving locality--note that this is important since upcoming work makes reading this bitmap fairly common. Convert all uses of error_report("warning:"... to use warn_report() instead. This helps standardise on a single method of printing warnings to the user. All of the warnings were changed using these two commands: find ./* -type f -exec sed -i \ 's|error_report(".*warning[,:] |warn_report("|Ig' {} + Indentation fixed up manually afterwards. The test-qdev-global-props test case was manually updated to ensure that this patch passes make check (as the test cases are case sensitive). Commit 0ab8ed18a6fe98bfc82705b0f041fbf2a8ca5b60 ("trace: switch to modular code generation for sub-directories") forgot to convert "tcg" trace events to the modular code generation approach where each sub-directory has its own trace-events file. This patch fixes compilation for "tcg" trace events. Currently they are only used in the root ./trace-events file. 2017-03-16trace: ensure $(tracetool-y) is defined in top level makefileDaniel P. Berrange
The build rules for trace files have a dependancy on $(tracetool-y). This variable populated in the trace/Makefile.objs file and thus its definition gets pulled into the top level makefile. This happens too late in the process though, so by the time $(tracetool-y) is defined, make has already evaluated $(tracetool-y) in the dependancies and found it to be empty. The result is that when the tracetool source is changed, the generated files are not rebuilt. The solution is to define the variable in the top level makefile too Signed-off-by: Daniel P. Introduce rules in the top level Makefile that are able to generate trace.[ch] files in every subdirectory which has a trace-events file. The top level directory is handled specially, so instead of creating trace.h, it creates trace-root.h. This allows sub-directories to include the top level trace-root.h file, without ambiguity wrt to the trace.g file in the current sub-dir. Currently the generated-events.[ch] files contain the event dstates, constants and TraceEvent structs, while the generated-tracers.[ch] files contain the actual trace probe logic. With the removal of usage of the event enums from the API there is no longer any compelling reason for the separation between these files. The generated-events.h content is only ever needed from the generated-tracers.[ch] files. The enums/constants/structs from generated-events.[ch] are thus moved into the generated-tracers.[ch], so that there is one less file to be generated. The CPUState struct has a bitmap tracking which VCPU events are currently active. This is indexed based on the event ID values, and sized according the maximum TraceEventVCPUID enum value. When we start dynamically assigning IDs at runtime, we can't statically declare a bitmap without making an assumption about the max event count. This problem can be solved by dynamically allocating the per-CPU dstate bitmap.
