2014-10-15Merge branch 'for-3.18-consistent-ops' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/percpu Pull percpu consistent-ops changes from Tejun Heo: "Way back, before the current percpu allocator was implemented, static and dynamic percpu memory areas were allocated and handled separately and had their own accessors. The distinction has been gone for many years now; however, the now duplicate two sets of accessors remained with the pointer based ones - this_cpu_*() - evolving various other operations over time. During the process, we also accumulated other inconsistent operations. This pull request contains Christoph's patches to clean up the duplicate accessor situation. __get_cpu_var() uses are replaced with with this_cpu_ptr() and __this_cpu_ptr() with raw_cpu_ptr(). Unfortunately, the former sometimes is tricky thanks to C being a bit messy with the distinction between lvalues and pointers, which led to a rather ugly solution for cpumask_var_t involving the introduction of this_cpu_cpumask_var_ptr(). This converts most of the uses but not all. Christoph will follow up with the remaining conversions in this merge window and hopefully remove the obsolete accessors" * 'for-3.18-consistent-ops' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/percpu: (38 commits) irqchip: Properly fetch the per cpu offset percpu: Resolve ambiguities in __get_cpu_var/cpumask_var_t -fix ia64: sn_nodepda cannot be assigned to after this_cpu conversion. 2014-10-02tile: add clock_gettime support to vDSOChris Metcalf
This change adds support for clock_gettime with CLOCK_REALTIME and CLOCK_MONOTONIC using vDSO. It also updates the vdso struct nomenclature used for the clocks to match the x86 code to keep it easier to update going forward. We also support the *_COARSE clockid_t, for apps that want speed but aren't concerned about fine-grained timestamps; this saves about 20 cycles per call (see http://lwn.net/Articles/342018/). 2014-10-02tile gxio: use better string copy primitiveChris Metcalf
Both strncpy and strlcpy suffer from the fact that they do partial copies of strings into the destination when the target buffer is too small. This is frequently pointless since an overflow of the target buffer may make the result invalid. strncpy() makes it relatively hard to even detect the error condition, and with strlcpy() you have to duplicate the buffer size parameter to test to see if the result exceeds it. By returning zero in the failure case, we both make testing for it easy, and by simply not copying anything in that case, we make it mandatory for callers to test the error code. To catch lazy programmers who don't check, we also place a NUL at the start of the destination buffer (if there is space) to ensure that the result is an invalid string. At some point it may make sense to promote strscpy() to a global platform-independent function, but other than the reviewers, no one was interested on LKML, so for now leave the strscpy() function as file-static. 2014-08-26tile: Replace __get_cpu_var usesChristoph Lameter
__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so the macro is removed too. The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86 arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global register that may be set to the per cpu base. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int *x = &__get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(&y); 2. Same as #1 but this time an array structure is involved. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y[20]); int *x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(y); 3. Retrieve the content of the current processors instance of a per cpu variable. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int x = __get_cpu_var(y) Converts to int x = __this_cpu_read(y); 4. Retrieve the content of a percpu struct DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct mystruct, y); struct mystruct x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to memcpy(&x, this_cpu_ptr(&y), sizeof(x)); 5. Assignment to a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y) __get_cpu_var(y) = x; Converts to __this_cpu_write(y, x); 6. 2014-08-08kexec: load and relocate purgatory at kernel load timeVivek Goyal
Load purgatory code in RAM and relocate it based on the location. Relocation code has been inspired by module relocation code and purgatory relocation code in kexec-tools. Also compute the checksums of loaded kexec segments and store them in purgatory. Arch independent code provides this functionality so that arch dependent bootloaders can make use of it. Helper functions are provided to get/set symbol values in purgatory which are used by bootloaders later to set things like stack and entry point of second kernel etc. Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@redhat.com> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@suse.de> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Cc: Eric Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Cc: H. 2014-08-08arm64,ia64,ppc,s390,sh,tile,um,x86,mm: remove default gate areaAndy Lutomirski
The core mm code will provide a default gate area based on FIXADDR_USER_START and FIXADDR_USER_END if !defined(__HAVE_ARCH_GATE_AREA) && defined(AT_SYSINFO_EHDR). This default is only useful for ia64. arm64, ppc, s390, sh, tile, 64-bit UML, and x86_32 have their own code just to disable it. arm, 32-bit UML, and x86_64 have gate areas, but they have their own implementations. This gets rid of the default and moves the code into ia64. This should save some code on architectures without a gate area: it's now possible to inline the gate_area functions in the default case. 2014-08-06mm/vmalloc.c: clean up map_vm_area third argumentWANG Chao
Currently map_vm_area() takes (struct page *** pages) as third argument, and after mapping, it moves (*pages) to point to (*pages + nr_mappped_pages). It looks like this kind of increment is useless to its caller these days. The callers don't care about the increments and actually they're trying to avoid this by passing another copy to map_vm_area(). The caller can always guarantee all the pages can be mapped into vm_area as specified in first argument and the caller only cares about whether map_vm_area() fails or not. This patch cleans up the pointer movement in map_vm_area() and updates its callers accordingly. 2014-07-17arch, locking: Ciao arch_mutex_cpu_relax()Davidlohr Bueso
The arch_mutex_cpu_relax() function, introduced by 34b133f, is hacky and ugly. It was added a few years ago to address the fact that common cpu_relax() calls include yielding on s390, and thus impact the optimistic spinning functionality of mutexes. Nowadays we use this function well beyond mutexes: rwsem, qrwlock, mcs and lockref. Since the macro that defines the call is in the mutex header, any users must include mutex.h and the naming is misleading as well. This patch (i) renames the call to cpu_relax_lowlatency ("relax, but only if you can do it with very low latency") and (ii) defines it in each arch's asm/processor.h local header, just like for regular cpu_relax functions. On all archs, except s390, cpu_relax_lowlatency is simply cpu_relax, and thus we can take it out of mutex.h. While this can seem redundant, I believe it is a good choice as it allows us to move out arch specific logic from generic locking primitives and enables future(?) archs to transparently define it, similarly to System Z. 2014-06-04hugetlb: restrict hugepage_migration_support() to x86_64Naoya Horiguchi
Currently hugepage migration is available for all archs which support pmd-level hugepage, but testing is done only for x86_64 and there're bugs for other archs. So to avoid breaking such archs, this patch limits the availability strictly to x86_64 until developers of other archs get interested in enabling this feature. Simply disabling hugepage migration on non-x86_64 archs is not enough to fix the reported problem where sys_move_pages() hits the BUG_ON() in follow_page(FOLL_GET), so let's fix this by checking if hugepage migration is supported in vma_migratable(). 2014-05-08sched/idle, tile: Switch from TS_POLLING to TIF_POLLING_NRFLAGPeter Zijlstra
Standardize the idle polling indicator to TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG such that both TIF_NEED_RESCHED and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG are in the same word. This will allow us, using fetch_or(), to both set NEED_RESCHED and check for POLLING_NRFLAG in a single operation and avoid pointless wakeups. Changing from the non-atomic thread_info::status flags to the atomic thread_info::flags shouldn't be a big issue since most polling state changes were followed/preceded by a full memory barrier anyway. 2014-05-07sched: Rework sched_domain topology definitionVincent Guittot
We replace the old way to configure the scheduler topology with a new method which enables a platform to declare additionnal level (if needed). We still have a default topology table definition that can be used by platform that don't want more level than the SMT, MC, CPU and NUMA ones. This table can be overwritten by an arch which either wants to add new level where a load balance make sense like BOOK or powergating level or wants to change the flags configuration of some levels. For each level, we need a function pointer that returns cpumask for each cpu, a function pointer that returns the flags for the level and a name. Only flags that describe topology, can be set by an architecture. The current topology flags are: SD_SHARE_CPUPOWER SD_SHARE_PKG_RESOURCES SD_NUMA SD_ASYM_PACKING Then, each level must be a subset on the next one. The build sequence of the sched_domain will take care of removing useless levels like those with 1 CPU and those with the same CPU span and no more relevant information for load balancing than its children. 2014-04-07Kconfig: rename HAS_IOPORT to HAS_IOPORT_MAPUwe Kleine-König
If the renamed symbol is defined lib/iomap.c implements ioport_map and ioport_unmap and currently (nearly) all platforms define the port accessor functions outb/inb and friend unconditionally. So HAS_IOPORT_MAP is the better name for this. Consequently NO_IOPORT is renamed to NO_IOPORT_MAP. The motivation for this change is to reintroduce a symbol HAS_IOPORT that signals if outb/int et al are available. I will address that at least one merge window later though to keep surprises to a minimum and catch new introductions of (HAS|NO)_IOPORT.
