This reverts commit 2431496fbdd142ccc83138d94f3f510a36ce9270 as it was applied incorrectly twice. Thanks to Jiri for pointing this out. Cc: Jiri Slaby <jslaby@suse.cz> Cc: Andrew Vagin <avagin@openvz.org> Cc: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
2012-11-26kbuild: Fix gcc -x syntaxJean Delvare
commit b1e0d8b70fa31821ebca3965f2ef8619d7c5e316 upstream. The correct syntax for gcc -x is "gcc -x assembler", not "gcc -xassembler". Even though the latter happens to work, the former is what is documented in the manual page and thus what gcc wrappers such as icecream do expect. This isn't a cosmetic change. The missing space prevents icecream from recognizing compilation tasks it can't handle, leading to silent kernel miscompilations. Besides me, credits go to Michael Matz and Dirk Mueller for investigating the miscompilation issue and tracking it down to this incorrect -x parameter syntax. commit eb9c5836384cd2a276254df6254ed71117983626 upstream. The out functions should only handle actual available data instead of the complete buffer. Otherwise for example the ep0_consume function will report ghost events since it tries to decode the complete buffer - which may contain partly invalid data. 2012-04-27Perf: fix build breakageZeev Tarantov
[Patch not needed upstream as this is a backport build bugfix - gregkh gcc correctly complains: util/hist.c: In function ‘__hists__add_entry’: util/hist.c:240:27: error: invalid type argument of ‘->’ (have ‘struct hist_entry’) util/hist.c:241:23: error: invalid type argument of ‘->’ (have ‘struct hist_entry’) for this new code: + if (he->ms.map != entry->ms.map) { + he->ms.map = entry->ms.map; + if (he->ms.map) + he->ms.map->referenced = true; + } because "entry" is a "struct hist_entry", not a pointer to a struct. In mainline, "entry" is a pointer to struct passed as argument to the function. So this is broken during backporting. But obviously not compile tested. 2012-04-22perf hists: Catch and handle out-of-date hist entry maps.David Miller
commit 63fa471dd49e9c9ce029d910d1024330d9b1b145 upstream. When a process exec()'s, all the maps are retired, but we keep the hist entries around which hold references to those outdated maps. If the same library gets mapped in for which we have hist entries, a new map will be created. But when we take a perf entry hit within that map, we'll find the existing hist entry with the older map. This causes symbol translations to be done incorrectly. For example, the perf entry processing will lookup the correct uptodate map entry and use that to calculate the symbol and DSO relative address. But later when we update the histogram we'll translate the address using the outdated map file instead leading to conditions such as out-of-range offsets in symbol__inc_addr_samples(). Therefore, update the map of the hist_entry dynamically at lookup/ creation time. Signed-off-by: David S. 2012-03-23perf tools: Incorrect use of snprintf results in SEGVAnton Blanchard
commit b832796caa1fda8516464a003c8c7cc547bc20c2 upstream. I have a workload where perf top scribbles over the stack and we SEGV. What makes it interesting is that an snprintf is causing this. The workload is a c++ gem that has method names over 3000 characters long, but snprintf is designed to avoid overrunning buffers. So what went wrong? The problem is we assume snprintf returns the number of characters written: ret += repsep_snprintf(bf + ret, size - ret, "[%c] ", self->level); ... ret += repsep_snprintf(bf + ret, size - ret, "%s", self->ms.sym->name); Unfortunately this is not how snprintf works. snprintf returns the number of characters that would have been written if there was enough space. In the above case, if the first snprintf returns a value larger than size, we pass a negative size into the second snprintf and happily scribble over the stack. If you have 3000 character c++ methods thats a lot of stack to trample. This patch fixes repsep_snprintf by clamping the value at size - 1 which is the maximum snprintf can write before adding the NULL terminator. I get the sinking feeling that there are a lot of other uses of snprintf that have this same bug, we should audit them all. 2012-02-20perf tools: Fix perf stack to non executable on x86_64Jiri Olsa
commit 7a0153ee15575a4d07b5da8c96b79e0b0fd41a12 upstream. By adding following objects: bench/mem-memcpy-x86-64-asm.o the x86_64 perf binary ended up with executable stack. The reason was that above object are assembler sourced and is missing the GNU-stack note section. In such case the linker assumes that the final binary should not be restricted at all and mark the stack as RWX. Adding section ".note.GNU-stack" definition to mentioned object, with all flags disabled, thus omiting this object from linker stack flags decision. commit a4a03fc7ef89020baca4f19174e6a43767c6d78a upstream. This patch fixes an issue where perf report shows nan% for certain perf.data files. The below is from a report for a do_fork probe: -nan% sshd [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork -nan% packagekitd [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork -nan% dbus-daemon [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork -nan% bash [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork A git bisect shows commit f3bda2c as the cause. However, looking back through the git history, I saw commit 640c03c which seems to have removed the required initialization for perf_sample->period. The problem only started showing after commit f3bda2c. The below patch re-introduces the initialization and it fixes the problem for me. With the below patch, for the same perf.data: 73.08% bash [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork 8.97% 11-dhclient [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork 6.41% sshd [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork 3.85% 20-chrony [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork 2.56% sendmail [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork This patch applies over current linux-tip commit 9949284. 2011-08-17perf tools: do not look at ./config for configurationJonathan Nieder
commit aba8d056078e47350d85b06a9cabd5afcc4b72ea upstream. In addition to /etc/perfconfig and $HOME/.perfconfig, perf looks for configuration in the file ./config, imitating git which looks at $GIT_DIR/config. If ./config is not a perf configuration file, it fails, or worse, treats it as a configuration file and changes behavior in some unexpected way. "config" is not an unusual name for a file to be lying around and perf does not have a private directory dedicated for its own use, so let's just stop looking for configuration in the cwd. Callers needing context-sensitive configuration can use the PERF_CONFIG environment variable. commit eda3913bb70ecebac13adccffe1e7f96e93cee02 upstream. The perf_event_attr struct has two __u32's at the top and they need to be swapped individually. 2011-06-16tools/perf: Fix static build of perf toolMathias Krause
To build a statically linked version of the perf tool all needed libraries must be added in the correct order to get the symbols resolved. Currently this is broken when, e.g. python or newt support is enabled -- libpython needs libpthread which is an unconditional link dependency of the perf tool; libslang needs libm, another unconditional dependency. To solve the problem in the long run without the need to keep track of transitive library dependencies, simply make the linker look at the EXTLIBS multiple times until it has all symbols resolved. 2011-06-14rcu: Use softirq to address performance regressionShaohua Li
Commit a26ac2455ffcf3(rcu: move TREE_RCU from softirq to kthread) introduced performance regression. In an AIM7 test, this commit degraded performance by about 40%. The commit runs rcu callbacks in a kthread instead of softirq. We observed high rate of context switch which is caused by this. Out test system has 64 CPUs and HZ is 1000, so we saw more than 64k context switch per second which is caused by RCU's per-CPU kthread. A trace showed that most of the time the RCU per-CPU kthread doesn't actually handle any callbacks, but instead just does a very small amount of work handling grace periods. This means that RCU's per-CPU kthreads are making the scheduler do quite a bit of work in order to allow a very small amount of RCU-related processing to be done. Alex Shi's analysis determined that this slowdown is due to lock contention within the scheduler. Unfortunately, as Peter Zijlstra points out, the scheduler's real-time semantics require global action, which means that this contention is inherent in real-time scheduling. (Yes, perhaps someone will come up with a workaround -- otherwise, -rt is not going to do well on large SMP systems -- but this patch will work around this issue in the meantime. And "the meantime" might well be forever.) This patch therefore re-introduces softirq processing to RCU, but only for core RCU work. RCU callbacks are still executed in kthread context, so that only a small amount of RCU work runs in softirq context in the common case. This should minimize ksoftirqd execution, allowing us to skip boosting of ksoftirqd for CONFIG_RCU_BOOST=y kernels. 2011-06-02ktest: Fix result of rebooting the kernelSteven Rostedt
The command that is called that reboots the kernel may fail but the return code is not passed back to the ktest.pl script. This is because a ';' is used between the two commands and if the second command fails, only the first command's return code is returned. Using a '&&' between the two commands fixes this. Because in perl the array size returned by $#arr, is the last index and not the actually size of the array, we end the config bisect early, thinking there is only one config left when there are in fact two. 2011-05-27perf events: initialize fd array to -1 instead of 0David Ahern
perf_evsel__alloc_fd allocates an array of file descriptors with the memory initialized to 0. The array has dimensions for cpus and threads. Later, __perf_evsel__open calls sys_perf_event_open for each cpu and thread dimensions. If the open fails for any of the cpus or threads then the fd's for this event are closed and the fd entry in the array is set to -1. Now, if the first attempt fails for the event (e.g., the event is not supported) the remaining dimensions (cpu > 0 and thread > 0) are not touched and left at the initialized value of 0. builtin-stat catches ENOENT and ENOSYS failures and allows the command to continue. The end result is that stat attempts to read from an fd of 0 which of course is stdin and so the command hangs until you type ctrl-D. Resolve by initializing the array to -1 since an fd < 0 is already handled. 2011-05-26perf symbols: Handle /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrictArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
Perf uses /proc/modules to figure out where kernel modules are loaded. With the advent of kptr_restrict, non root users get zeroes for all module start addresses. So check if kptr_restrict is non zero and don't generate the syntethic PERF_RECORD_MMAP events for them. Warn the user about it in perf record and in perf report. In perf report the reference relocation symbol being zero means that kptr_restrict was set, thus /proc/kallsyms has only zeroed addresses, so don't use it to fixup symbol addresses when using a valid kallsyms (in the buildid cache) or vmlinux (in the vmlinux path) build-id located automatically or specified by the user. Provide an explanation about it in 'perf report' if kernel samples were taken, checking if a suitable vmlinux or kallsyms was found/specified. Restricted /proc/kallsyms don't go to the buildid cache anymore. Example: [acme@emilia ~]$ perf record -F 100000 sleep 1 WARNING: Kernel address maps (/proc/{kallsyms,modules}) are restricted, check /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict. Samples in kernel functions may not be resolved if a suitable vmlinux file is not found in the buildid cache or in the vmlinux path. Samples in kernel modules won't be resolved at all. If some relocation was applied (e.g. kexec) symbols may be misresolved even with a suitable vmlinux or kallsyms file. [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.005 MB perf.data (~231 samples) ] [acme@emilia ~]$ [acme@emilia ~]$ perf report --stdio Kernel address maps (/proc/{kallsyms,modules}) were restricted, check /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict before running 'perf record'. 2011-05-23perf tools: Fix ommitted mmap data update on remapFrederic Weisbecker
Commit eac9eacee16 "perf tools: Check we are able to read the event size on mmap" brought a check to ensure we can read the size of the event before dereferencing it, and do a remap otherwise to move the buffer forward. However that remap was ommitting all the necessary work to update the new page offset, head, and to unmap previous pages, etc... To fix this, gather all the code that fetches the event in a seperate helper which does all the necessary checks about the header/event size and tells us anytime a remap is needed.
