2009-02-23x86: remove the Voyager 32-bit subarchIngo Molnar
Impact: remove unused/broken code The Voyager subarch last built successfully on the v2.6.26 kernel and has been stale since then and does not build on the v2.6.27, v2.6.28 and v2.6.29-rc5 kernels. No actual users beyond the maintainer reported this breakage. Patches were sent and most of the fixes were accepted but the discussion around how to do a few remaining issues cleanly fizzled out with no resolution and the code remained broken. In the v2.6.30 x86 tree development cycle 32-bit subarch support has been reworked and removed - and the Voyager code, beyond the build problems already known, needs serious and significant changes and probably a rewrite to support it. CONFIG_X86_VOYAGER has been marked BROKEN then. The maintainer has been notified but no patches have been sent so far to fix it. While all other subarchs have been converted to the new scheme, voyager is still broken. We'd prefer to receive patches which clean up the current situation in a constructive way, but even in case of removal there is no obstacle to add that support back after the issues have been sorted out in a mutually acceptable fashion. So remove this inactive code for now. Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

2009-01-31x86/Voyager: make it build and bootJames Bottomley
[ mingo@elte.hu: these fixes are a subset of changes cherry-picked from: git://git.kernel.org:/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jejb/voyager-2.6.git They fix various problems that recent x86 changes caused in the Voyager subarchitecture: both APIC changes and cpumask changes and certain cleanups caused subarch assumptions to break. Most of these changes are obsolete as the subarch code has been removed from the x86 development tree - but we merge them upstream to make Voyager build and boot. ] Signed-off-by: James Bottomley <James.Bottomley@HansenPartnership.com> Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>
2009-01-31x86: pass in cpu number to switch_to_new_gdt()Brian Gerst
Impact: cleanup, prepare for xen boot fix. Xen needs to call this function very early to setup the GDT and per-cpu segments. Remove the call to smp_processor_id() and just pass in the cpu number. Signed-off-by: Brian Gerst <brgerst@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>

2009-01-27x86: make Voyager use x86 per-cpu setup.Brian Gerst
Impact: standardize all x86 platforms on same setup code With the preceding changes, Voyager can use the same per-cpu setup code as all the other x86 platforms. Signed-off-by: Brian Gerst <brgerst@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>
2009-01-16percpu: add optimized generic percpu accessorsIngo Molnar
It is an optimization and a cleanup, and adds the following new generic percpu methods: percpu_read() percpu_write() percpu_add() percpu_sub() percpu_and() percpu_or() percpu_xor() and implements support for them on x86. (other architectures will fall back to a default implementation) The advantage is that for example to read a local percpu variable, instead of this sequence: return __get_cpu_var(var); ffffffff8102ca2b: 48 8b 14 fd 80 09 74 mov -0x7e8bf680(,%rdi,8),%rdx ffffffff8102ca32: 81 ffffffff8102ca33: 48 c7 c0 d8 59 00 00 mov $0x59d8,%rax ffffffff8102ca3a: 48 8b 04 10 mov (%rax,%rdx,1),%rax We can get a single instruction by using the optimized variants: return percpu_read(var); ffffffff8102ca3f: 65 48 8b 05 91 8f fd mov %gs:0x7efd8f91(%rip),%rax I also cleaned up the x86-specific APIs and made the x86 code use these new generic percpu primitives. tj: * fixed generic percpu_sub() definition as Roel Kluin pointed out * added percpu_and() for completeness's sake * made generic percpu ops atomic against preemption Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>
2009-01-16x86: merge 64 and 32 SMP percpu handlingTejun Heo
Now that pda is allocated as part of percpu, percpu doesn't need to be accessed through pda. Unify x86_64 SMP percpu access with x86_32 SMP one. Other than the segment register, operand size and the base of percpu symbols, they behave identical now. This patch replaces now unnecessary pda->data_offset with a dummy field which is necessary to keep stack_canary at its place. This patch also moves per_cpu_offset initialization out of init_gdt() into setup_per_cpu_areas(). Note that this change also necessitates explicit per_cpu_offset initializations in voyager_smp.c. With this change, x86_OP_percpu()'s are as efficient on x86_64 as on x86_32 and also x86_64 can use assembly PER_CPU macros. 2009-01-03x86: cleanup some remaining usages of NR_CPUS where s/b nr_cpu_idsMike Travis
Impact: Reduce future system panics due to cpumask operations using NR_CPUS Insure that code does not look at bits >= nr_cpu_ids as when cpumasks are allocated based on nr_cpu_ids, these extra bits will not be defined. Also some other minor updates: * change in to use cpu accessor function set_cpu_present() instead of directly accessing cpu_present_map w/cpu_clear() [arch/x86/kernel/reboot.c] * use cpumask_of() instead of &cpumask_of_cpu() [arch/x86/kernel/reboot.c] * optimize some cpu_mask_to_apicid_and functions. 2008-12-16x86: prepare for cpumask iterators to only go to nr_cpu_idsMike Travis
Impact: cleanup, futureproof In fact, all cpumask ops will only be valid (in general) for bit numbers < nr_cpu_ids. So use that instead of NR_CPUS in various places. This is always safe: no cpu number can be >= nr_cpu_ids, and nr_cpu_ids is initialized to NR_CPUS at boot. 2008-12-13cpumask: centralize cpu_online_map and cpu_possible_mapRusty Russell
Impact: cleanup Each SMP arch defines these themselves. Move them to a central location. Twists: 1) Some archs (m32, parisc, s390) set possible_map to all 1, so we add a CONFIG_INIT_ALL_POSSIBLE for this rather than break them. 2) mips and sparc32 '#define cpu_possible_map phys_cpu_present_map'. Those archs simply have phys_cpu_present_map replaced everywhere. 3) Alpha defined cpu_possible_map to cpu_present_map; this is tricky so I just manipulate them both in sync. 4) IA64, cris and m32r have gratuitous 'extern cpumask_t cpu_possible_map' declarations. 2008-10-31x86/voyager: fix missing cpu_index initialisationJames Bottomley
Impact: fix /proc/cpuinfo output on x86/Voyager Ever since | commit 92cb7612aee39642d109b8d935ad265e602c0563 | Author: Mike Travis <travis@sgi.com> | Date: Fri Oct 19 20:35:04 2007 +0200 | | x86: convert cpuinfo_x86 array to a per_cpu array We've had an extra field in cpuinfo_x86 which is cpu_index. Unfortunately, voyager has never initialised this, although the only noticeable impact seems to be that /proc/cpuinfo shows all zeros for the processor ids. 2008-09-08kernel/cpu.c: create a CPU_STARTING cpu_chain notifierManfred Spraul
Right now, there is no notifier that is called on a new cpu, before the new cpu begins processing interrupts/softirqs. Various kernel function would need that notification, e.g. kvm works around by calling smp_call_function_single(), rcu polls cpu_online_map. The patch adds a CPU_STARTING notification. It also adds a helper function that sends the message to all cpu_chain handlers. Tested on x86-64. All other archs are untested. Especially on sparc, I'm not sure if I got it right. 2008-04-24x86: unify KERNEL_PGD_PTRSJeremy Fitzhardinge
Make KERNEL_PGD_PTRS common, as previously it was only being defined for 32-bit. There are a couple of follow-on changes from this: - KERNEL_PGD_PTRS was being defined in terms of USER_PGD_PTRS. The definition of USER_PGD_PTRS doesn't really make much sense on x86-64, since it can have two different user address-space configurations. I renamed USER_PGD_PTRS to KERNEL_PGD_BOUNDARY, which is meaningful for all of 32/32, 32/64 and 64/64 process configurations. - USER_PTRS_PER_PGD was also defined and was being used for similar purposes. Converting its users to KERNEL_PGD_BOUNDARY left it completely unused, and so I removed it. 2007-10-27x86: voyager: fix bogus conversion to per_cpu for boot_cpu_infoJames Bottomley
There were two problems. Firstly, someone forgot the struct keyword in front of cpuinfo_x86, so I take it this wasn't even compile checked. Secondly, the actual definition has this as a SHARED_ALIGNED, so the definitions mismatch. 2007-10-19x86: convert cpuinfo_x86 array to a per_cpu arrayMike Travis
cpu_data is currently an array defined using NR_CPUS. This means that we overallocate since we will rarely really use maximum configured cpus. When NR_CPU count is raised to 4096 the size of cpu_data becomes 3,145,728 bytes. These changes were adopted from the sparc64 (and ia64) code. An additional field was added to cpuinfo_x86 to be a non-ambiguous cpu index. This corresponds to the index into a cpumask_t as well as the per_cpu index. It's used in various places like show_cpuinfo(). cpu_data is defined to be the boot_cpu_data structure for the NON-SMP case. 2007-10-17x86: expand /proc/interrupts to include missing vectors, v2Joe Korty
Add missing IRQs and IRQ descriptions to /proc/interrupts. /proc/interrupts is most useful when it displays every IRQ vector in use by the system, not just those somebody thought would be interesting. This patch inserts the following vector displays to the i386 and x86_64 platforms, as appropriate: rescheduling interrupts TLB flush interrupts function call interrupts thermal event interrupts threshold interrupts spurious interrupts A threshold interrupt occurs when ECC memory correction is occuring at too high a frequency. Thresholds are used by the ECC hardware as occasional ECC failures are part of normal operation, but long sequences of ECC failures usually indicate a memory chip that is about to fail. Thermal event interrupts occur when a temperature threshold has been exceeded for some CPU chip. IIRC, a thermal interrupt is also generated when the temperature drops back to a normal level. A spurious interrupt is an interrupt that was raised then lowered by the device before it could be fully processed by the APIC. Hence the apic sees the interrupt but does not know what device it came from. For this case the APIC hardware will assume a vector of 0xff. Rescheduling, call, and TLB flush interrupts are sent from one CPU to another per the needs of the OS. Typically, their statistics would be used to discover if an interrupt flood of the given type has been occuring. AK: merged v2 and v4 which had some more tweaks AK: replace Local interrupts with Local timer interrupts AK: Fixed description of interrupt types.
