2011-05-02agp: fix OOM and buffer overflowVasiliy Kulikov
commit b522f02184b413955f3bc952e3776ce41edc6355 upstream. page_count is copied from userspace. agp_allocate_memory() tries to check whether this number is too big, but doesn't take into account the wrap case. Also agp_create_user_memory() doesn't check whether alloc_size is calculated from num_agp_pages variable without overflow. This may lead to allocation of too small buffer with following buffer overflow. Another problem in agp code is not addressed in the patch - kernel memory exhaustion (AGPIOC_RESERVE and AGPIOC_ALLOCATE ioctls). It is not checked whether requested pid is a pid of the caller (no check in agpioc_reserve_wrap()). Each allocation is limited to 16KB, though, there is no per-process limit. This might lead to OOM situation, which is not even solved in case of the caller death by OOM killer - the memory is allocated for another (faked) process. commit 194b3da873fd334ef183806db751473512af29ce upstream. pg_start is copied from userspace on AGPIOC_BIND and AGPIOC_UNBIND ioctl cmds of agp_ioctl() and passed to agpioc_bind_wrap(). As said in the comment, (pg_start + mem->page_count) may wrap in case of AGPIOC_BIND, and it is not checked at all in case of AGPIOC_UNBIND. As a result, user with sufficient privileges (usually "video" group) may generate either local DoS or privilege escalation. 2011-05-02virtio: console: Enable call to hvc_remove() on console port removeAmit Shah
commit afa2689e19073cd2e762d0f2c1358fab1ab9f18c upstream. This call was disabled as hot-unplugging one virtconsole port led to another virtconsole port freezing. Upon testing it again, this now works, so enable it. In addition, a bug was found in qemu wherein removing a port of one type caused the guest output from another port to stop working. I doubt it was just this bug that caused it (since disabling the hvc_remove() call did allow other ports to continue working), but since it's all solved now, we're fine with hot-unplugging of virtconsole ports. 2011-03-06virtio: console: Don't access vqs if device was unpluggedAmit Shah
If a virtio-console device gets unplugged while a port is open, a subsequent close() call on the port accesses vqs to free up buffers. This can lead to a crash. The buffers are already freed up as a result of the call to unplug_ports() from virtcons_remove(). The fix is to simply not access vq information if port->portdev is NULL. release_region/release_mem_region Request_region should be used with release_region, not release_resource. This patch contains a number of changes, related to calls to request_region, request_mem_region, and the associated error handling code. 1. For the call to request_region, the variable io_resource storing the result is dropped. The call to release_resource at the end of the function is changed to a call to release_region with the first two arguments of request_region as its arguments. The same call to release_region is also added to release_ipwireless. 2. The first call to request_mem_region is now tested and ret is set to -EBUSY if the the call has failed. This call was associated with the initialization of ipw->attr_memory. But the error handling code was testing ipw->common_memory. The definition of release_ipwireless also suggests that this call should be associated with ipw->common_memory, not ipw->attr_memory. 3. The second call to request_mem_region is now tested and ret is set to -EBUSY if the the call has failed. 4. The various gotos to the error handling code is adjusted so that there is no need for ifs. 5. Return the value stored in the ret variable rather than -1. The current TPM TIS driver in git discards the timeout values returned from the TPM. The check of the response packet needs to consider that the return_code field is 0 on success and the size of the expected packet is equivalent to the header size + u32 length indicator for the TPM_GetCapability() result + 3 timeout indicators of type u32. I am also adding a sysfs entry 'timeouts' showing the timeouts that are being used. 2011-02-10char/ipmi: fix OOPS caused by pnp_unregister_driver on unregistered driverCorey Minyard
This patch fixes an OOPS triggered when calling modprobe ipmi_si a second time after the first modprobe returned without finding any ipmi devices. This can happen if you reload the module after having the first module load fail. The driver was not deregistering from PNP in that case. Peter Huewe originally reported this patch and supplied a fix, I have a different patch based on Linus' suggestion that cleans things up a bit more. 2011-02-04agp: ensure GART has an address before enabling itStephen Kitt
Some BIOSs (eg. the AMI BIOS on the Asus P4P800 motherboard) don't initialise the GART address, and pcibios_assign_resources() can ignore it because it can be marked as a host bridge (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24392#c5 for details). This was handled correctly up to 2.6.35, but the pci_enable_device() cleanup in 2.6.36 96576a9e1a0cdb8 ("agp: intel-agp: do not use PCI resources before pci_enable_device()") means that the kernel tries to enable the GART before assigning it an address; in such cases the GART overlaps with other device assignments and ends up being disabled. This patch fixes https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24392 Note that I imagine efficeon-agp.c probably has the same problem, but I can't test that and I'd like to make sure this patch is suitable for -stable (since 2.6.36 and 2.6.37 are affected). 2011-02-04Revert "agp: AMD AGP is used on UP1100 & UP1500 alpha boxen"Matt Turner
This reverts commit f191f144079b0083c6fa7d01a4acbd7263fb5032. The AMD 751 and 761 chipsets are used on the UP1000, UP1100, and UP1500 OEM motherboards, but they neglect to do anything to make AGP work. According to Ivan Kokshaysky: There is quite fundamental conflict between the Alpha architecture and x86 AGP implementation - Alpha is entirely cache coherent by design, while x86 AGP is not (I mean native AGP DMA transactions, not a PCI over AGP). There are no such things as non-cacheable mappings or software support for cache flushing/invalidation on Alpha, so x86 AGP code won't work on Nautilus. Commit 728674a7e466628df2aeec6d11a2ae1ef968fb67 moved virtio_console.c to drivers/tty/hvc/ under the perception of this being an hvc driver. It was such once, but these days it has generic communication capabilities as well, so move it to drivers/char/. In the future, the hvc part from this file can be split off and moved under drivers/tty/hvc/. The -rt patches change the console_semaphore to console_mutex. As a result, a quite large chunk of the patches changes all acquire/release_console_sem() to acquire/release_console_mutex() This commit makes things use more neutral function names which dont make implications about the underlying lock. The only real change is the return value of console_trylock which is inverted from try_acquire_console_sem() This patch also paves the way to switching console_sem from a semaphore to a mutex. commit 3f0d3d016d89a5efb8b926d4707eb21fa13f3d27 adds a check for PNP device id to the common tpm_tis_init() function, which in some cases (force=1) will be called without the device being a member of a pnp_dev. Oopsing and panics ensue. Move the test up to before the call to tpm_tis_init(), since it just modifies a global variable anyway. If duration variable value is 0 at this point, it's because chip->vendor.duration wasn't filled by tpm_get_timeouts() yet. This patch sets then the lowest timeout just to give enough time for tpm_get_timeouts() to further succeed. This fix avoids long boot times in case another entity attempts to send commands to the TPM when the TPM isn't accessible. The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than only small devices. This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc). Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they are making should enable it. KMSG_DUMP_PANIC This series aims to develop logging facility for enterprise use. It is important to save kernel messages reliably on enterprise system because they are helpful for diagnosing system. This series add kmsg_dump() to the paths loosing kernel messages. The use case is the following. [Use case of reboot/poweroff/halt/emergency_restart] My company has often experienced the followings in our support service. - Customer's system suddenly reboots. - Customers ask us to investigate the reason of the reboot. We recognize the fact itself because boot messages remain in /var/log/messages. However, we can't investigate the reason why the system rebooted, because the last messages don't remain. And off course we can't explain the reason. We can solve above problem with this patch as follows. Case1: reboot with command - We can see "Restarting system with command:" or ""Restarting system.". Case2: halt with command - We can see "System halted.". Case3: poweroff with command - We can see " Power down.". Case4: emergency_restart with sysrq. - We can see "Sysrq:" outputted in __handle_sysrq(). Case5: emergency_restart with softdog. - We can see "Initiating system reboot" in watchdog_fire(). So, we can distinguish the reason of reboot, poweroff, halt and emergency_restart. If customer executed reboot command, you may think the customer should know the fact. However, they often claim they don't execute the command when they rebooted system by mistake. No message remains on the current Linux kernel, so we can't show the proof to the customer. This patch improves this situation. This patch: Alters mtdoops and ramoops to perform their actions only for KMSG_DUMP_PANIC, KMSG_DUMP_OOPS and KMSG_DUMP_KEXEC because they would like to log crashes only. 2011-01-12i915/gtt: fix ordering causing DMAR errors on object teardown.Dave Airlie
Previous to the last GTT rework we always rewrote the GTT then unmapped the object, somehow this got reversed in the rework in 2.6.37-rc5 timeframe.
